Settlement Proposed in Class Action Suit Over Unsolicited Text Messages
Several weeks ago, a notification program was launched per the order from the United States District Court for the Central District of California. The effort was designed to alert countless mobile users about a proposed class action settlement that could affect their rights.

Spammers fined $700K for SMS spam campaign
Two UK spammers have been fined $700,000 for conducting a spam text message campaign. The two UK residents, Christopher Niebel and Gary McNeish, reportedly sent out 800,000 spam text messages per day from their company, Tetrus Telecoms.

In a move that everyone in the mobile marketing industry will surely applaud, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has slapped a £440,000 fine on the two owners of Tetrus Telecoms (can’t find a website for them, surprisingly – Ed) which has, in the ICO’s words: “plagued the public with millions of unlawful spam texts over the past three years”.

Study Finds Rise in Texting Even as Revenue Drops
A new report finds that certain activities that people do on a cellphone, like taking a picture and shooting video, have increased significantly in the last few years. Texting, in particular, has grown considerably — but not texting in the traditional sense.

Neiman Marcus, Visa engage users via personalized, location-based SMS
High-end retail chain Neiman Marcus is testing a mobile initiative in partnership with Visa that allows consumers to get personalized, real-time offers via SMS depending on location and purchase history.

Cell Phone Activities
Fully 82% of American adults own a cell phone and now use the devices to do much more than make phone calls. Cell phones have become a portal for an ever-growing list of activities.  In nationally representative phone surveys in the spring and summer, the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project obtained readings on some of the most popular activities.

National Study Indicates Mobile Spam Is Impacting the Vast Majority of U.S. Adults
“Mobile spam” has become prevalent, with the majority of U.S. adults who text reporting that they have received an unsolicited text message, according to a survey conducted online by Harris Interactive on behalf of Cloudmark among 2,475 U.S. adults aged 18 and older, of whom 1,801 were identified as texters. Many U.S. adults who text are also not aware of the most appropriate response to unsolicited messages.
