What is an SMS Aggregator?

Before we jump into different tiers, let’s talk about what an SMS aggregator is. There are many wireless carriers and it would be impossible for an SMS software provider to connect with every single one individually. An SMS aggregator sits between the wireless carriers and the SMS software provider and acts as a conduit between the two.

What is a Tier 1 SMS Aggregator?

There are two types of SMS Aggregators, a Tier 1 and a Tier 2 SMS Aggregator.

A Tier 1 SMS Aggregator has a direct connection to four of the top wireless carries. These wireless carriers include AT&T, Sprint/Nextel, T-Mobile, and Verizon. The Tier 1 SMS Aggregator connects to four out of five major wireless carriers.

A Tier 2 SMS Aggregator only has a connection to three out of five major wireless carriers. It is an industry best practice to use a Tier 1 SMS Aggregator, as it gives you the most direct connections to the wireless carriers and eliminates additional third-party platforms.
