Smartphone Penetration Hits 40%

Wow, pretty big news coming out of Nielsen this last week. According to July 2011 data, forty percent of mobile consumers over 18 in the U.S. now have smartphones. Going deeper into the data, it looks like Android is the most popular operating system, with 40% of the smartphone OS share, with Apple trailing at 28%.

What does this surge in smartphone adoption mean for text messaging? It’s actually good news, considering the fact that the most recent Pew Internet study on Americans and Their Cell Phones found that while 59% of feature phone owners send or receive text messages, 92% of smartphone owners do. So as we see it here at Tatango, the more smartphones, the more text messages.
