I saw the following tweet and almost died laughing. I realize that QR codes are all the rage right now in marketing, but don’t implement a QR code, just for the sake of implementing a QR code.

Chipotle, has anyone ever told you that only 40% of the U.S. has a smartphone? If so, why the heck do you keep sending out SMS marketing campaigns that aren’t accesible to the 60% of your customers that don’t have smartphones?

You know why SMS messages are limited to 160 characters? One guy, Friedhelm Hillebrand said so. To read more about his story and the birth of SMS, you can read this interesting article in the L.A. Times. To respect Mr. Hillebrand’s wishes, we here at Tatango only allow our clients to send 160 characters in their SMS marketing messages.

I’ve heard from numerous people in the Seattle area over the last 10 minutes that they’ve received the following text message claiming to be from Wells Fargo. This text message isn’t from Wells Fargo, this is a text message scam and should be ignored.

This is a follow up blog post regarding Chipotle’s SMS campaign. After opting into their SMS campaign in store back in May of 2011, they just recently sent out their first SMS message. To say I was disappointed would be an understatement.

Since starting Tatango in 2007, I’ve seen some pretty bad SMS campaigns. Some of the worst offenders of 2011 are below. While these SMS campaigns have been bad, I’ve never seen one as bad as the Emerald City Smoothie campaign I saw last week here in Seattle.
