AT&T just announced that they are launching AT&T Alerts, a service that sends you text alerts of sales/discounts going on near you. This SMS campaign uses geo-location data to determine your location and then sends you the special deals based on what types of deals you want to be notified about. Some of the participating retailers are Gap, Staples, Duracell, Neiman Marcus, Zales and Motorola just to name a few.
